Golf Tip #4: Overcoming Nerves

The worst thing about first tee nerves is their potential impact on the rest of your round. If you let them get to you and you play the opening hole badly, chances are that’s how the rest of the day will go.

I use various techniques to fight those jitters. For instance, to encourage a mood of composure, I’ll swing my driver lazily back and forth a few times while focusing my mind on what I must do to meet the ball solidly.

My most effective image is the one I usually finish up with. As I step up to the ball, I visualise the upcoming swing in my mind almost as if it’s happening in slow motion: easy back easy through, with no effort to force the shot in any way.

Often the result is the best drive of the round, just when it’s needed the most!
